Voting Resource Guide

If you are not registered to vote or if information in your registration has changed, please follow the following 3 steps. If your registration is up to date you should be sent a mail-in ballot, but should still request a ballot anyway to ensure you receive one on time, just follow steps 2 and 3.

Step 1: Register to vote

Anyone registered to vote in the District of Columbia can vote by absentee ballot in any election in which they are eligible to vote. If you are not registered to vote, visit www.vote4DC.com for instructions on how to register to vote, or visit the District of Columbia Board of Elections (DCBOE) website.

To check your registration status go to:

www.dcboe.org/Voters/Register-To-Vote/Check-Voter-Registration-Status

Step 2: Request a mail-in ballot

The DC Board of Elections has said every registered voter will be sent an absentee ballot, however voters should still request the ballots to make sure they receive one.

Mail-in ballots can be requested no later than October 26. Check your registration information at vote4dc.com to ensure they have your correct home address on file.

To request a Mail-in Ballot, please download and completely fill out the Absentee Ballot Request Form found on the DC Board of Elections website, sign it, and return it to the Board of Elections by either:

  1. Mail to: 1015 Half Street, SE, Suite 750; Washington, D.C. 20003

  2. Fax to: 202.347.2648

  3. Or by email in a scanned attachment to DCabsentee@dcboe.org.

Do I have to use the DCBOE Absentee Ballot Request Form? No, you are not required to use the Absentee Ballot Request Form to request an absentee ballot - any signed document requesting an absentee ballot is acceptable. Please ensure that your request for an absentee ballot includes the following information:

  • Your name

  • The election(s) for which you are requesting a ballot

  • The address at which you are registered

  • Your current address (if different from above)

  • Your contact information (telephone number and/or email address)

  • Your date of birth

  • Mailing address to which the ballot should be sent

  • Your original signature (A signed absentee ballot request sent electronically will be considered to contain an original signature)

Optional: your telephone number and email address (while not required, this information will expedite the processing of your request, should they need to contact you)

Step 3: VOTE!

You will receive your absentee ballot by mail at the mailing address you provide on the Absentee Ballot Request Form.

Once you receive your ballot:

  1. Fill out the ballot by darkening the corresponding ovals to the candidate/response you wish to vote for.*

  2. Seal the completed ballot in the provided envelope (addressed to DC Board of Elections) and attach postage[1] .*

  3. Sign the envelope with your full signature and the date (on the designated spaces).*

  4. Insert your envelope in your nearest post box or at your post-office OR deliver your ballot to a polling station.

*Complete instructions on how to vote and return your ballot will be included along with your ballot so refer to them first.

Your voted and mailed ballot MUST BE postmarked or otherwise demonstrated to have been sent on or before Election Day, and must arrive no later than the 7th day after Election Day. You can track the status of your absentee ballot on www.dcboe.org/Voters/Absentee-Voting/Track-Absentee-Ballot

Called DCBOE several times to get more specific information. Postage was included for the primaries but it is unclear whether it will be provided again.
